If you're a homeowner in Florida, this simple document that could be saving you hundreds... sometimes thousands... of dollars a year on homeowners insurance:
the wind mitigation report.
Nonetheless, a surprising number of homeowners either don't know it exists or haven't had one done in years.
Here's what it is, why it matters, and how to make sure you're not leaving money on the table.
What Is a Wind Mitigation Report?

A wind mitigation report (officially the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form, OIR-B1-1802) is a state-standardized inspection that documents the wind-resistant features built into your home. A qualified inspector examines things like:
Roof covering type and installation date
Roof shape (hip roofs typically score better than gable roofs)
Roof deck attachment... how your roof sheathing is fastened to the trusses
Roof-to-wall connection ...whether you have clips, straps, or just nails holding your roof to your walls
Secondary water resistance (SWR) ... a sealed roof deck that protects against leaks if shingles are lost
Opening protection ... impact-rated windows, doors, garage doors, or shutters
Each of these factors is scored, and the results are submitted directly to your insurance company.
Why It's Worth Doing
1. Lower Insurance Premiums: Florida law requires insurers to offer credits and discounts for wind-resistant construction features. A strong wind mitigation report can meaningfully reduce your windstorm insurance premium...often enough to pay for the inspection itself many times over in the first year alone.
2. It's Valid for Multiple Years: Most wind mitigation reports are valid for five years, so this isn't an annual expense. It's an occasional investment with years of ongoing savings.
3. Especially Valuable After a Roof Replacement: If you've had a new roof installed, your wind mitigation report is likely outdated and underselling your home's actual protection levels. Modern roofing systems...proper nailing patterns, sealed decking, updated materials... often qualify for significantly better credits than what's on file with your insurer. If you've replaced your roof and haven't updated this report, you are likely paying more than you need to.
4. Useful During Home Sales Buyers and sellers both benefit from a current wind mitigation report. It gives buyers clarity on what to expect for insurance costs, and it can be a selling point that sets a home apart in a competitive market.
5. Documentation You Can Trust Because the form is standardized and submitted directly to insurers, it removes guesswork. It's not a sales pitch...it's a factual, third-party verification of your home's construction.
Who Should Get One?
Homeowners who've never had a wind mitigation inspection
Homeowners whose last inspection is more than five years old
Anyone who's recently replaced their roof, windows, doors, or garage door
Homeowners preparing to sell, or buyers evaluating a purchase
What Does a Wind Mitigation Inspection Cost?
The cost for a Unifom Wind Mitigation Report is generally between $75 - $100
(Included with most of our residential roof replacements)
The Bottom Line
A wind mitigation report is one of the simplest, most overlooked ways Florida homeowners can lower their insurance costs while getting an accurate, documented picture of how their home stands up to storms. If it's been a while since your last inspection...or if you've made any roofing or window upgrades... it's worth having it looked at.
