Roofing warranties are one of the most misunderstood parts of buying a new roof. Terms like “lifetime, limited, and manufacturer-backed” are often used without explanation… leaving homeowners unsure about how this protection works.
This guide explains roofing warranties in plain language, so you know exactly what is covered and who is responsible for it.
The Two Main Types of Roofing Warranties (Explained)
Almost every roof warranty falls into two categories:
Material (Manufacturer) Warranties2.
Workmanship (Labor) Warranties
They cover different things, and both matter.
Material (Manufacturer) Warranties
What they cover:
Defects in the roofing materials themselves, such as shingles and qualifying accessories.
What’s not covered:
Installation errors, leaks caused by improper workmanship, or damage unrelated to manufacturing defects.
Workmanship (Labor) Warranties
What they cover:
Problems caused by installation errors, such as flashing failures, fastening issues, or ventilation mistakes.
Who provides them:
Standard workmanship warranties are provided by the contractor
Enhanced workmanship warranties are manufacturer-backed and only available through manufacturer certified contractors
This distinction is important. A contractor-backed warranty depends entirely on the contractor still being in business.
Coverage Periods Explained
Many shingles are marketed with a “lifetime” warranty. In practice, this means:
A non-prorated period (often 10–25 years)
Followed by a prorated period (30 years, Lifetime, etc), where coverage decreases over time
After the non-prorated period, the manufacturer may only cover a portion of the material cost — and labor is usually not included unless an upgraded warranty is in place.
Top Manufacturer-Backed Workmanship Warranties
Some manufacturers offer upgraded warranties that cover both materials and labor and are backed by the manufacturer, not just the roofer.
***Note*** These warranties can only be offered by contractors with manufacturer certifications and require the use of specific components in order to qualify. Be sure to confirm these details with your contractor.
GAF Silver Pledge™ Warranty (10-Year Workmanship Coverage)
Available only through GAF-certified contractors.

Includes:
GAF shingles and qualifying system components
10 years of manufacturer-backed workmanship coverage
Coverage for installation-related issues
No wind limit exclusion (including named storms)
Transferable one time
If a workmanship issue occurs during the first 10 years, GAF stands behind the repair, not just the contractor.
Owens Corning Preferred Protection (10-Year Manufacturer-Backed Workmanship Warranty)
Available only through Owens Corning Preferred and Platinum Contractors.
Includes:
Owens Corning shingles and system components
10 years of manufacturer-backed workmanship coverage
Coverage for installation errors
130 Mph Wind Limit
Transferable one time
This provides similar protection to GAF’s Silver Pledge by adding manufacturer support to the workmanship portion of the roofing project.
Why Labor vs. Material Coverage Matters
Most failed roof installation problems are caused by human error, not defective shingles.
Material warranties alone do not cover labor to fix leaks
Manufacturer-backed workmanship warranties protect against:
Improper flashing
Installation mistakes
Ventilation issues
Installation-related leaks
Without workmanship coverage, homeowners often pay out of pocket for repairs… even if the materials are under warranty.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign a Roofing Contract
Before choosing a contractor, ask:
Is the workmanship warranty contractor-backed or manufacturer-backed?
How long is workmanship covered?
What happens if the contractor is no longer in business?
Is the roof installed as a complete manufacturer system?
Will the warranty be properly registered after installation?
Clear answers to these questions are a sign of a reputable contractor. The manufacturer certification process ensures that the contractor you are selecting has been vetted and understands what is needed to provide this additional protection.
Bottom Line
Not all roofing warranties offer the same protection.
Material warranties cover manufacturing defects
Workmanship warranties cover installation errors
Manufacturer-backed workmanship warranties provide the strongest coverage
Both GAF Silver Pledge and Owens Corning’s 10-year workmanship warranties offer meaningful workmanship protection when installed by certified contractors.
Understanding these differences helps you make a lower-risk, better-informed roofing decision.
